Widget is a simple application extension that runs on a home screen to let you easily launch a specific function of an app, either pre-loaded or third-party app, in your Samsung Galaxy S8 to get information or for more convenient access. As the example, you can use the direct dial widget to easily call a specific contact with a single tap from your home screen, or you can use the direct message widget to easily send a message to a specific contact, etc.


How to add a widget to a home screen?
As the example, we'll add a direct dial widget to a home screen so you can easily call a specific contact from the home screen by using the following steps:
  1. On the home screen, pinch the screen using two fingers or long tap on an empty area to go to the screen where you can customise your home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets to go to the widgets screen.
  3. Swipe the screen to the left or right to find the direct dial 1x1 widget, or you can use the search function to easily find this widget by typing direct dial on the search field.
  4. Tap and hold the direct dial 1x1 widget and then drag it to an empty area on the home screen. Release the widget to place it.
  5. Select the required contact you want to assign to the direct dial widget.
  6. The direct dial widget assigned to the selected contact has been added to the home screen.
  7. Now, you can easily call the contact simply by single tapping the direct dial widget.


How to remove a widget from a home screen?
When needed, you can easily remove unused or unwanted widget from the home screen. As the example, we'll remove the direct dial widget from the home screen by using the following steps:
  1. Go to the home screen panel where the direct dial widget you want to remove is placed in.
  2. Long tap the direct dial widget and then select Remove shortcut.
  3. The selected direct dial widget has been removed from the home screen.

You can make the way accessing your favourite webpages, either those you find while browsing the Internet or those you have bookmarked before, much easier and faster by adding shortcuts to those webpages on the home screen. It'll save you more time because you can easily access those webpages simply by tapping the shortcut on the home screen.


How to easily access favourite webpages from home screen?
There are two ways that can be taken so you can easily access your favourite webpages the from home screen: by adding a shortcut to a webpage on the home screen and by adding S Bookmarks widget on the home screen.

Method #1: By adding a shortcut to a webpage on the home screen
  1. While you're opening a webpage in the Internet app, tap More at the top right and then select Add shortcut on home screen to create the shortcut of the currently opened webpage on the home screen.
  2. Now, you can easily access the webpage by tapping the shortcut on the home screen and the webpage will be loaded shortly in the Internet app.

Method #2: By adding S bookmarks widget to the home screen
  1. Go to the widgets list by long tapping on an empty area on the home screen and then tap Widgets button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Find S Bookmarks 2x2 widget. Drag the widget to an empty area on the home screen and then release to place it.
  3. If needed, you can adjust the widget size by dragging in or out the blue frame.
  4. Now, you can easily access a bookmarked webpage by tapping the required bookmark on the S bookmark widget on the home screen and the webpage will be loaded shortly in the Internet app.

Before you can use a widget, you have to add it first to your home screen. As the example, we'll try adding the music widget to the home screen by using the following steps:
  1. While you're in a home screen, pinch the screen using two fingers or long tap on an empty area.
  2. Tap the Widgets icon at the bottom of the screen to view the widgets list.
  3. Swipe the screen to the left or right to find the Music 4x1 widget, or you can use the search function to find this widget with more quickly by using these steps:
    • Tap More at the top right and then select Search widgets.
    • Type music in the search field. All music widgets will be displayed on your screen.
  4. Tap and hold the Music 4x1 widget and then drag it to an empty area on a home screen. Release to place the widget.
  5. The Music 4x1 widget has been added to the home screen. As a note, some widgets may ask you to do some configurations, if that so, you just need to follow the on-screen instructions to complete the configuration. How to remove a widget from the home screen?
When needed, you can easily remove unused or unwanted widgets from your home screen. As the example, we'll try removing the music widget from the home screen by using the following steps:
  1. Go to the home screen where the music widget is placed in.
  2. Tap and hold the music widget and then drag it to the Remove icon located at the top of the screen. Release to delete the widget.
  3. The music widget has been removed from the home screen.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Use Magnifier in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with set of default widgets, one of which is the magnifier widget. This widget works by utilizing the rear camera to help you magnify text or objects. Before you can use the magnifier widget, you have to add it to your home screen first.


How to add the magnifier widget to the home screen
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. While you're in home screen, long press the Recent apps key or long tap on a blank area of the home screen.
  2. Tap the Widgets button at the bottom of the screen. It'll quickly bring you to the widgets list.
  3. Find the Magnifier 1x1 widget .
  4. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the home screen.
  5. Release the widget to place it in home screen.
  6. The magnifier widget has been added to home screen.


How to use the magnifier widget?
See the following steps as the example of using the magnifier widget:
  1. Tap the magnifier widget icon in your home screen to open it.
  2. Aim the camera to the desired text or objects.
  3. Adjusting the magnification:
    • Tap at the bottom of the screen to increase the magnification.
    • Tap at the bottom of the screen to decrease the magnification.
  4. Adjusting the focus:
    • Tap at the top right to focus in the center of the screen.
    • To change the focus manually, tap where you want to focus.
  5. Using the flashlight:
    While you're viewing text or objects in dark or low light condition, you can tap at the top of the screen to turn on the flash.
  6. Taking a photo of text or objects:
    • Tap at the top left.
    • If needed, you can adjust the magnification by tapping or at the bottom of the screen before saving the image.
    • Tap at the top right to save the image.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Use Torch Light in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

Samsung Galaxy S5 has a default widget named Torch which will let you use your phone as a flashlight to improve your visibility. This widget works by utilizing the LED flash below the rear camera to project a flashlight beam. You need to add the torch widget to your home screen first before you can use this widget to turn on or off the LED flash.


How to add the torch widget to home screen?
See the following steps to do so:
  1. While you're in home screen, long press the Recent apps key or long tap on a blank area of the home screen to go to the home screen edit page.
  2. Tap the Widgets icon at the bottom of the screen. It'll quickly bring you to the widgets list.
  3. Find the Torch 1x1 widget.
  4. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the home screen.
  5. Release the widget to place it in home screen.
  6. The torch widget has been added to home screen.

How to use the torch widget?
When you have added the torch widget in your home screen, you can use this widget to turn the LED flash on or off to improve your visibility. See the following steps as the example to use this widget:
  1. Turn on the flashlight
    Tap the torch widget icon in home screen to turn on the flashlight. The torch widget turns green and the white light icon appears on the status bar as a sign that the flashlight is on.
  2. Turn off the flashlight
    FYI, since this widget can't turn off automatically then you need to turn it off manually otherwise it will stay on even when the screen is locked or off. You can use one of the two following ways to turn off the flashlight:
    • From home screen
      Tap the torch widget icon in home screen to turn off the flashlight. The torch widget icon turns gray and the white light icon disappear from the status bar as a sign that the flashlight is off.
    • From the notification panel
      Swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap the torch notification to turn off the flashlight.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Get Back Kids Mode Installer in Home Screen in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

Some insiders have sent me emails and said that they had accidentally removed the kids mode installer icon from their home screens which made them couldn't install the kids mode app. FYI, since the kids mode installer is one of default widgets on the Samsung Galaxy S5 then you can easily get the kids mode installer icon back to your home screen simply by finding the kids mode widget from the widgets list and then add it to your home screen. Once done, you can use the kids mode installer icon that you have added to the home screen to install and configure the kids mode app.


How to add the kids mode widget to home screen?
Before doing this steps, make sure you have a free space on your home screen. Well, kindly use the following steps to re-add the kids mode widget to home screen:
1. While you're on home screen, long press the Recent apps key or long tap on a blank area of the home screen to go to the home screen edit page.
2. Tap Widgets icon at the bottom of the screen. It'll quickly bring you to the widgets list.
3. Find the Kids Mode 1x1 widget.
4. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the home screen.
5. Release the widget to place it.
6. Once done, tap the widget to install the kids mode. You can see the detail steps to install and configure the kids mode app here.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Add or Remove a City in Accuweather Widget in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

If you add your current city to the Accuweather widget, it'll help you to know the latest weather conditions in your city with ease. FYI, since this widget can handle more than one city, if needed you can also add another cities into the widget so that you can easily know the weather conditions in other cities directly from your home screen.


How to add a new city to the Accuweather widget?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Tap the Accuweather widget in your home screen.
  2. Tap to add a new city.
  3. Key in the city name in the search field and then tap to start searching.
  4. Tap the required city from the search result list.
  5. The selected city has been added to your Accuweather widget.
  6. Press the Home key to go to your home screen.
  7. To see the weather conditions in other cities you have added to the widget, swipe the Accuweather widget up or down.


How to remove a city from the Accuweather widget?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Tap the Accuweather widget in your home screen.
  2. Tap to see all of cities you have added to this widget.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Delete.
  4.  Select the required city you want to delete.
  5. Tap Done button.
  6. Tap OK button to confirm.
  7. The selected city has been deleted from the Accuweather widget.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Make Accuweather Widget Becomes Transparent in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

By default, the Accuweather widget on your home screen displays a picture in the background and it will change based on the current weather forecast. However, if you don't like the background picture, you can adjust the widget transparency in the widget settings menu so that the background picture of the widget will be invisible.


How to make the Accuweather widget becomes transparent?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Tap the Accuweather widget on your home screen.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Widget transparency. By default, the widget transparency is set to 0%.
  4. Drag the widget transparency adjustment bar to the rightmost, or in other words, you have to adjust the widget transparency up to 100%. You'll get the preview when adjusting the widget transparency so that you'll get an idea how it might look like when the transparency has been adjusted.
  5. Press the Home key to go to your home screen and you'll see the Accuweather widget becomes transparent.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Change Temperature Unit in the Accuweather Widget in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

The current temperature is one of information that you can get from the Accuweather widget. This widget is is available in your home screen by default, but if you have accidentally removed it, you can get it back simply by adding the Accuweather widget from the the widgets list to your home screen. To fit the widget with your need, you can do some customizations to this widget, one of which is by changing the temperature unit from Celsius to Fahrenheit or from Fahrenheit to Celsius.


How to change the temperature unit in the Accuweather widget?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Tap the Accuweather widget on your home screen.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Unit and then select from the following options:
    • °C: select this option if you want the Accuweather widget displays the current temperature in Celsius degree.
    • °F: select this option if you want the Accuweather widget displays the current temperature in Fahrenheit degree.
  4. Press the Home key to go to your home screen and you'll see the Accuweather widget displays the current temperature with the selected temperature unit.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Get Back Accuweather Widget to Home Screen in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

This week, more than two insiders sent me emails and said that they had accidentally removed the Accuweather widgets from their home screens and they wanted to get it back. FYI, since the Accuweather widget is a default widget in Samsung Galaxy S5, you can get it back to the home screen simply by finding the Accuweather widget from your widgets list and then add it to your home screen, as you used to do when adding a widget to home screen.


How to add the Accuweather widget to home screen?
Before doing the following steps, make sure you have a free space in your home screen. Do the following steps to add a weather widget to home screen:
  1. While you're on home screen, long press the Recent apps key or long tap on a blank area of the home screen to go to the home screen edit page.
  2. Tap Widgets icon at the bottom of the screen. It'll bring you to the widgets list.
  3. Find the Weather 4x2 widget.
  4. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the required space in home screen.
  5. Release the widget to place it in home screen.
  6. If you'd like to display your current city in the Accuweather widget, do as follows:
    • Tap the weather widget.
    • If your GPS is off, you need to turn it on by tapping the Settings button in a pop up window that appears in your screen. It'll quickly bring you to the Location menu.
    • Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn on the location services.
    • Press the Back key.
    • Your current location will be displayed on the screen.
    • Tap the current location to display it on the Accuweather widget in home screen.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable or Disable Mobile Data From Home Screen in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

A couple weeks back, an insider named Chantal sent me an email and asked me a way to add mobile data button to her Samsung Galaxy S5 home screen. However, since Samsung Galaxy S5 doesn't have the default option or widget to let you turn on or off mobile data from home screen, then you need to install a third-party mobile data widget app from the Play Store to do so. To make it clearer, as the example, we'll use the mobile enabler widget app to let you turn on or off the mobile data from home screen.


How to turn on or off mobile data from home screen by utilizing data enabler widget?
Before doing this steps, make sure you have an empty space in your home screen. See the following steps to install the data enabler widget and then add it to home screen so that you can use it to quickly enable or disable your mobile data connection:
  1. Open Play Store app.
  2. Find the Data Enabler Widget app and then install it into your phone.
  3. Once the installation is completed, the data enabler will be added to your widgets list.
  4. Press the Home key to go to your home screen.
  5. Long press the Recent apps key or long tap in a blank area of the home screen and then tap Widgets .
  6. Find the Data Enabler 1x1 widget.
  7. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the home screen.
  8. Release the widget to place it on home screen.
  9. Now, you can quickly turn on or off your mobile data connection simply by single tapping the data enabler widget on home screen. The arrow icon within the widget turns white when it's enabled.
