For some reason, you will probably need to export your contacts list as .vcf file, for instance when you need to backup your contacts list or when you need to send your contacts list to other phones, etc. Fortunately, the stock Contacts app lets you export your contacts list as .vcf file, either to the SD card or to the device storage.


How to export contacts list as .vcf file to the device storage?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Export to device storage to export your contacts list as .vcf file to the device storage.
  7. Tap OK button to continue exporting contacts.
  8. The contacts list will be exported shortly as .vcf file and will be saved in the device storage. You'll be notified in the notification panel when the process is completed.

A contacts file is usually saved as .vcf file. By using the import/export menu in the stock Contacts app, you cannot only import .vcf files from the SD card, but also from the internal storage. You can import a single contact file or multiple contacts files you have saved in the internal storage to your contacts list at once.


How to import .vcf file in the device storage to your contacts list?
Basically, you can import .vcf files to your phone contacts list or other accounts (e.g: Google account or Samsung account), but as the example, we'll try to import .vcf file that has been saved in the internal storage to the phone contacts list by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Import from device storage.
  7. Tap Device to add the contacts in the .vcf files to your phone contacts list.
  8. If you only have a single vcf file in your internal storage then the file will be imported directly. If you have some vcf files in your internal storage then you'll be provided with the following options:
    • Import one vCard file: select this option if you want to import a single .vcf file in the internal storage to your phone contacts list.
    • Import multiple vCard files: select this option if you want to import more than one .vcf files in the internal storage to your phone contacts list at once.
    • Import all vCard files: select this option if you want to import all .vcf files in the internal storage to your phone contacts list at once.
  9. Tap OK button.
  10. If you have chosen to import one or multiple vCard files then you'll need to select which .vcf files you want to import and then tap OK button. If you have chosen to import all vCard files then all .vcf files in the internal storage will be imported directly.
  11. The selected .vcf files have been imported to your phone contacts list.

Exporting contacts list to SD card as .vcf file is one of the way to backup your contacts. If needed, you can import the .vcf file later to re-add the contacts to your contacts list, or you can send the .vcf file to others to share your contacts.

You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Export to SD card. FYI, this option only available if you have inserted a SD card into your phone.
  7. Tap OK button to continue exporting your contacts list.
  8. Your contacts list will be exported shortly as .vcf file and will be saved in the SD card. You'll be notified on the status bar or notification panel if the process is completed.

There are some conditions when you will probably need to import contacts files or .vcf files in your SD card to your contacts list, for instance when you need to add some contacts in .vcf file that has been sent by others to your contacts list, or when you have backed up your contacts list as .vcf file in your SD card and need to re-add them to your contacts list. Fortunately, the stock Contacts app has the feature which will let you import a single contact file or multiple contacts files in your SD card to your contacts list at once.


How to import vCard files from the SD card to the phone storage?
Basically, you can import vCard files or .vcf files in your SD card to your phone storage or other accounts(e.g: Google account or Samsung account), but as the example, we'll try to import .vcf files from the SD card to the phone storage by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Import from SD card. FYI, this option only available if you have inserted a SD card into your phone.
  7. Tap Device to import the contacts files from the SD card to the phone storage.
  8. If you only have a single vcf file in your SD card then the file will be imported directly. If you have some vcf files in your SD card then you'll be provided with the following options:
    • Import one vCard file: select this option if you want to import a single .vcf file in the SD card to the phone storage.
    • Import multiple vCard files: select this option if you want to more than one .vcf files in the SD card to the phone storage at once.
    • Import all vCard files: select this option if you want to import all .vcf files in the SD card to the phone storage at once.
  9. Tap OK button.
  10. If you have chosen to import one or multiple vCard files then you'll need to select which .vcf files you want to import and then tap OK button. If you have chosen to import all vCard files then all .vcf files in the SD card will be imported directly.
  11. The selected .vcf files have been imported to the phone storage.

Copying contacts list to a SIM card is one of the ways to backup your contacts or to move your contacts to another phone with ease. But, you have to remember that since a SIM card has a limited storage therefore you will probably not be able to copy all of your contacts to a single SIM card. In addition, the SIM card also only lets you to add a single phone number and a single name for a single contact therefore if a contact that you're going to copy to the SIM card has multiple phone numbers or names then only the phone number or the name that have been set as the default preferences that will be copied to the SIM card, and if the contact has another additional information, e.g: email address, address, etc then these information won't be copied to the SIM card.


How to export contacts to a SIM card?
You can copy contacts from your phone storage or other accounts(e.g: Google account or Samsung account) to the inserted SIM card by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Export to SIM card. FYI, this option only available if you have inserted a SIM card into your phone.
  7. Select the required contacts you want to export to the inserted SIM card, or tap Select all to select all contacts.
  8. Tap Done button.
  9. A window will appear to warn you that some information within the contacts might be lost when they're copied to the SIM card.
  10. Tap OK button to continue exporting selected contacts to the SIM card.
  11. The selected contacts will be copied to the SIM card.

As a note, if you own S5 with other model number and don't have the option to export contacts to SIM card then you can alternatively do so by using a third-party app from the Play Store that has the ability to transfer contacts to the SIM card.

For some reason, you will probably need to copy contacts within a SIM card to your phone, for instance when you have a new phone and need to copy contacts that you have saved in a SIM card or when you want to get more options for your contacts. As we all know, when you save your contacts in SIM card, you're only allowed to add a single phone number and a single name for a single contact, but if you save your contacts in the phone storage then you will get more options for your contacts, such as: you can add multiple phone numbers for a single contact, add other additional contact's information, add photo to contacts, etc.


How to import SIM Card contacts to the device storage?
Basically, you can copy your SIM card contacts to your phone storage or other accounts, e.g: Google account or Samsung account. But, as the example, we'll try to import SIM card contacts to the phone storage by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  4. Tap Contacts.
  5. Tap Import/export.
  6. Tap Import from SIM card. FYI, this option only available if you have inserted a SIM card to your phone.
  7. Tap Device to import SIM card contacts to your phone storage.
  8. Select the required SIM card contacts you want to import, or tap Select all to select all SIM card contacts.
  9. Tap Done button.
  10. All selected SIM card contacts will be copied to your phone storage.

As a note, since the steps above is written based on my SM-G900H, if you have a S5 with other model number and don't have the option to import SIM card contacts, then you can alternatively copy your SIM card contacts to your phone storage or other accounts by using a third-party app from the Play Store that has the ability to copy SIM card contacts.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Clear Contact's Default Preferences in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

Marking an entry within a contact as the default preferences will help your phone to know which the primary entry that should be used if the contact has multiple entries in a field, e.g: phone number, name or email address. However, for some reason, you may want to clear the default preferences of an entry within a contact, for instance if you have accidentally marked a wrong entry as the default preferences.



How to remove the default preferences of an entry within a contact?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact.
  4. Long tap the entry that has been set as the default preferences (e,g: phone number or email address) and then select Clear default.
  5. The default preferences of the selected entry has been cleared and the checkmark will be removed.

When you have a contact that has multiple entries in a field or when you have linked contacts so that it has multiple entries in a field(e.g: name, phone number or email address) then you can set one of the entries in that field as the default. The entry within a contact that has been set as the default preferences will be used automatically when you use it in other apps, for instance when you're going to send a message to a contact that has multiple phone numbers then the stock Messaging app will automatically use the default phone number as the recipient.


How to set the default preferences of a contact?
To make it easier, as the example, we'll try to set the default phone number in a contact that has multiple phone numbers by using three different methods as you can see below.


Method #1: From the Contacts app
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact.
  4. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Mark as default.
  5. Tap the required phone number you want to set as the default. The radio button next to the phone number will turn green when it's selected.
  6. If needed, you can also set default preferences for another fields (name or email address) here.
  7. Tap Save button to save the changes.
  8. The selected phone number has been set as the default and will have a checkmark .


Method #2: From the Contacts app
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact.
  4. Long tap the required phone number you want to set as the default and then select Mark as default.
  5. The selected phone number has been set as the default and will have a checkmark .


Method #3: From the Messaging app
This method lets you easily set the default phone number when you're going to send a message to a contact that has multiple phone numbers.
  1. Open the stock Messaging app.
  2. Tap to compose a new message.
  3. Tap to select contact. If the contact has multiple phone numbers, you can set one of them as the default by checking the box next to Remember this choice and then tap the required phone number.
  4. The selected phone number will be set as the default and will be used as the message recipient.

One of the ways that can be done to avoid the Contacts app displays duplicate contacts when you have chosen to display all contacts from all sources or accounts is by linking the same contacts so that they will be displayed as a single entry in the Contacts app. Aside from linking contacts, if needed, you can also separate a contact from linked contacts so that the contact will be displayed as a separate entry in the Contacts app, for instance when you have accidentally linked a wrong contact.


How to separate linked contacts?
You can unlink a contact from linked contacts to display the contact as an individual entry by using these following methods:


Method #1
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact you want to separate.
  4. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Unlink contacts.
  5. Tap next to the required entry you want to separate.
  6. Tap OK button to confirm separation.
  7. The selected contact has been separated.


Method #2
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact you want to separate.
  4. Tap in the Connected via section.
  5. Tap next to the required entry you want to separate.
  6. Tap OK button to confirm separation.
  7. The selected contact has been separated.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Link Contacts in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

As we all know that the stock Contacts app allows you to display or sync contacts from other sources or accounts, e.g: Facebook account, Google account, etc. Therefore, when you have synced contacts with those accounts, you will probably face a situation where you have a single contact whose the information are saved in the different locations, for instance a contact named Robert that has an entry with phone number stored in the phone memory and another entry with email address stored in the Google account. To avoid the Contacts app displays duplicate contacts, you can link those contacts so that the app will display them as a single contact but the information is still kept separate in the different locations.


How to link contacts?
You can merge multiple contacts into a single one by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Links contacts.
  4. The device will show you all of contacts that can be joined. By default, the contacts are sorted by the name. If needed, you can change how the contacts will be sorted by tapping the box in the right side of the Sort by option and then select from the following options:
    • Name: select this option to sort contacts by their names so that all contacts with the same name will be listed in a single section.
    • Phone number: select this option to sort contacts by their phone numbers so that all contacts with the same phone number will be listed in a single section.
    • Email address: select this option to sort contacts by their email addresses so that all contacts with the same email address will be listed in a single section.
  5. Select the required contacts you want to join.
  6. Tap Done button.
  7. The selected contacts within the same section have been joined into a single contact. As the example, if the contacts are sorted by the name then all selected contacts with the same name will be joined into a single contact.

The stock Contacts app lets you sort your contacts list alphabetically, either by the first name or the last name. Sorting contacts list with the proper method will be able to help you to quickly and easily find the required contact. If needed, you can also change the way the Contacts app to display the contacts' names, either display contacts by the first name first or by the last name first.


How to sort your contacts list?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Contacts.
  4. To change how the contacts will be sorted, tap Sort by and then select from the following options:
    • Given name: select this option if you'd like to sort your contacts list alphabetically by the given name or the first name.
    • Family name: select this option if you'd like to sort your contacts list alphabetically by the family name or the last name.
  5. To change how the contacts will be displayed, tap Display contacts by and then select from the following options:
    • Given name first: select this option if you'd like to display the contact's name in your contacts list by the first name first.
    • Family name first: select this option if you'd like to display the contact's name in your contacts list by the last name first.
  6. Press the Back key twice to go back to your contacts list and you'll see your contacts list will be sorted and displayed based on your selection.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Show Only Contacts with Phone Numbers in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

The stock Contacts app lets you display contacts from other sources or accounts, e.g: Google account, Facebook account, etc. Some of contacts from those accounts sometimes don't have phone number inside or only contain with email address. For any reason, if you don't want the Contacts app displays contacts without phone numbers then you have to set this app to only show contacts with phone numbers and hide other contacts.


How to show only contacts with phone numbers?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Contacts.
  4. Check the box next to Only contacts with phones to enable this option so that only contacts with phone numbers which will be shown.
  5. Press the Back key twice to go back to your contacts list.
  6. The Contacts app will display only contacts with phone numbers and hide other contacts.

In Samsung Galaxy S5, you are not only allowed to add a new contact and save it in the different places(e.g: in the device storage, in SIM card, etc), but also display contacts from other accounts that you have added in your phone(e,g: Google account, Facebook account, etc). By default, the Contacts app displays all contacts you have, either those you have saved in your phone, SIM card or other accounts. However, if needed, you can select which contacts to display so that the Contacts app will display contacts from the selected source or account only.


How to select which contacts to display?
You can display only contacts from certain source or account by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Contacts.
  4. Tap Contacts to display.
  5. Here you can choose which contacts to display by selecting from the following options:
    • All contacts: select this option to display all contacts you have.
    • Device: select this option to display phone contacts only.
    • SIM card: select this option to display SIM Card contacts only.
    • Your Samsung account: select this option to display contacts in your Samsung account only.
    • Your Google account: select this option to display contacts in your Google account only.
    • Your third-party app account: select this option to display contacts in certain third-party app account only, e.g: Facebook, WhatsApp, etc
    • Customised list: select this option to display customized list contacts. Tap to select which contacts you want to display. As the example, you can select Device and SIM card to display your phone and SIM card contacts only.
  6. Press the Back key twice to go back to your contacts list.
  7. The Contacts app will display only contacts from the selected source or account.

For some reason, you may need to delete contacts that you have added to your contacts list, for instance when you want certain contact no longer listed in your contacts list or when you want to clean up your contacts list by deleting unused or unwanted contacts.


How to delete contacts?
You can delete a single contact or multiple contacts from Contacts app by using two different methods that you can see in the following steps:


Method #1
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Delete.
  3. Select the required contacts you want to delete.
  4. Tap Done button.
  5. Tap OK button to confirm.
  6. The selected contacts have been deleted.


Method #2
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Long tap the required contact you want to delete to select it.
  3. If needed, you can select another contacts by single tap the contacts.
  4. Tap .
  5. Tap OK button to confirm.
  6. The selected contacts have been deleted.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Add Photo to Contact in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

If you add a new contact to your contacts list and save it to the device storage or to your Samsung/Google account then you will be allowed to change the default contact's picture icon with a photo or another image. Adding a photo to a contact will help you to easily know the contact even without you have to read the name. The photo that you have added to a contact will also be displayed to represent the contact in other apps, for instance the photo contact will be displayed when the contact calls you or when the contact sends you a message.


How to add a photo to a contact?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the required contact's name whose the picture you want to change.
  4. Tap to edit the selected contact.
  5. Tap and then select the required photo source. To use a photo from Gallery app as the photo contact go to the step #6, to use a tagged picture as the photo contact go to the step #7, while to take a picture and use the result as the photo contact go to the step #8.
  6. Using a photo from Gallery app as the photo contact:
    • Tap Image.
    • Select the required photo you want to use as the photo contact.
    • If needed, you can adjust the area of the photo you want to use as the photo contact.
    • Tap Done button.
  7. Using a tagged picture as the photo contact:
    • Tap Tagged pictures.
    • Select the required tagged picture you want to use as the photo contact.
    • If needed, you can adjust the area of the photo you want to use as the photo contact.
    • Tap Done button.
  8. Taking a picture and use the result as the photo contact:
    • Tap Take picture.
    • Take a picture of a person or an object you want to use as the photo contact.
    • Tap OK button.
    • If needed, you can adjust the area of the photo you want to use as the photo contact.
    • Tap Done button.
  9.  Tap Save button to save the changes.
  10. The selected photo has been added to the selected contact as the photo contact.

Contacts app is a pre-installed app in Samsung Galaxy S5 that can be used to manage all of your contacts. When you have added a contact to your contacts list, you can easily make a call or send a message to the contact without you have to worry about forgetting the number or using a wrong number. The contact's information that you have entered will also be used by other apps, for instance the stock Messaging app will display the contact's name in incoming messages so that you can easily know who has sent the messages.

How to add a new contact?
There are some methods that can be used to create a new contact. This time, we'll try adding a new contact by using four different methods: from the Contacts app, from the keypad, from the call logs and from the Messaging app.


Method #1: From the Contacts app
You can add a new contact directly from the Contacts app by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. If needed, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap to add a new contact.
  4. By default, the new contact will be saved in the device storage. If needed, you can change the contact's storage by tapping and then select the required contact's storage. FYI, if you choose SIM card as the storage then you're only allowed to add a name and a single phone number for a single contact
  5. Enter the required name for the contact in the Name field.
  6. Enter the phone number for the contact in the Phone number field. 
  7. If you didn't choose SIM card as the contact's storage, you can add more phone numbers by tapping next to phone number and then enter the required phone number. Also, you can enter the additional contact's information (e,g: email, ringtone, etc) in the available information fields.
  8. Tap Save button.
  9. The new contact has been added to the contacts list.


Method #2: From the keypad
You can add a new contact from the keypad by using the following steps:
  1. Open Phone app.
  2. Tap the Keypad tab.
  3. Enter the phone number you want to add as a new contact.
  4. Tap + Add to contacts.
  5. Tap Create contact.
  6. By default, the new contact will be saved in the device storage. If needed, you can change the contact storage by tapping and then select the required contact's storage. FYI, if you choose SIM card as the storage then you're only allowed to add a name and a single phone number for a single contact
  7. Enter the required name for the contact in the Name field.
  8. If you didn't choose SIM card as the contact's storage, you can enter the additional contact's information (e,g: email, ringtone, etc) in the available information fields.
  9. Tap Save button.
  10. The new contact has been added to the contacts list.


Method #3: From the call log
This method lets you easily add the one that has called you or has been called by you as a new contact. See the following steps to do so:
  1. Open Phone app.
  2. Tap the Logs tab.
  3. Tap the contact's picture icon of the required call log whose the caller has not been added to the contacts list and then tap Create contact.
  4. By default, the new contact will be saved in the device storage. If needed, you can change the contact storage by tapping and then select the required contact's storage. FYI, if you choose SIM card as the storage then you're only allowed to add a name and a single phone number for a single contact
  5. Enter the required name for the contact in the Name field.
  6. If you didn't choose SIM card as the contact's storage, you can enter the additional contact's information (e,g: email, ringtone, etc) in the available information fields.
  7. Tap Save button.
  8. The new contact has been added to the contacts list.


Method #4: From the Messaging app
This method lets you easily add the sender of a message as a new contact. See the following steps to do so:
  1. Open the stock Messaging app.
  2. Tap the contact's picture icon of the required message whose the sender has not been added to the contacts list and then tap Create contact.
  3. By default, the new contact will be saved in the device storage. If needed, you can change the contact storage by tapping and then select the required contact's storage. FYI, if you choose SIM card as the storage then you're only allowed to add a name and a single phone number for a single contact
  4. Enter the required name for the contact in the Name field.
  5. If you didn't choose SIM card as the contact's storage, you can enter the additional contact's information (e,g: email, ringtone, etc) in the available information fields.
  6. Tap Save button.
  7. The new contact has been added to the contacts list.
